Pharma held as a risk-off haven — most fill-finish and injectables names green — while China's WuXi Biologics fell 7.4% and Corning's optics side dragged it down 6%.
Dr. Reddy's (RDY) led the pharma basket Monday, up 2.7% to $12.82 on the API-reshoring rung — and pharma traded like the defensive haven it is on a chip-led risk-off day. The sterile-injectables rung was broadly green: ICU Medical (ICUI) +2.2% to $163.91 and Baxter (BAX) +1.8% to $24.78, the shortage-exposed names that benefit when capital rotates toward non-cyclical cash flows. The big bioprocessing-and-instruments names were quietly firm — Thermo Fisher (TMO) +0.6% to $662.24, Danaher (DHR) +0.6% to $221.20, West Pharmaceutical (WST) +0.4% to $367.60, and Agilent (A) +0.5% to $171.33.
The steepest decliner was WuXi Biologics (WXIBF), down 7.4% to $6.75 on the CDMO-capacity rung — the China-exposed outsourced-manufacturing name that still trades under the BIOSECURE and reshoring overhang defining its chokepoint. No single dated headline drove Monday's move; it fits the pattern of de-risking Chinese biotech into a broader risk-off. Its sister name WuXi AppTec (WUXAY) held roughly flat, -0.1% to $26.84 — the split a reminder that the market still prices the biologics franchise as the more exposed of the two.
The notable crossover was Corning (GLW), down 6.0% to $147.28. Corning sits in the pharma basket on the pharma-glass rung for its Valor vial platform, but the stock is still driven by its optical-fiber business — and Monday it fell with the same datacenter-optics selloff that crushed the compute complex, not on anything vial-related. The other real decliner was Maravai (MRVI) -5.1% to $7.06 on the bioprocessing rung, the high-beta end of the group. Elsewhere the instruments-and-QC rung was placid, with Charles River (CRL) roughly flat at $301.86.
Earnings are the next hard reads on the fill-finish and packaging rungs: West Pharmaceutical reports Q3 on Oct 22 and Charles River on Nov 5 — the prints that will show whether Section 232's 100% tariff on patented pharma and APIs, in effect since July, is pulling fill-finish and API volume onshore. The BIOSECURE overhang that pressured WuXi on Monday remains the CDMO rung's defining structural catalyst.
