Daily brief · 2026-07-23

Dr. Reddy's collapsed 9% on a U.S.-driven earnings miss eight days before 100% Section 232 pharma tariffs bite — the API-reshoring chokepoint did the damage while Repligen led a thin green list.

Repligen led a short green list, up 2.3% to $140.09, the session's best bioprocessing name on an otherwise heavy day for pharma supply. Repligen sits on the bioprocessing chokepoint — the filtration, chromatography, and single-use consumables that gate biologics output — and firmed ahead of its own Q2 on August 4. There was no company-specific catalyst; the bid was simply for the picks-and-shovels of drug manufacturing on a day the finished-dose and API names were being sold.

Dr. Reddy's was the laggard, down 9.4% to $11.38, after a Q1 FY27 miss: revenue of $807M fell 19% year over year, U.S. sales collapsed (₹22.7B from ₹36.5B), and margins compressed sharply from EBITDA levels above 26% a year earlier. RDY maps the api-reshoring chokepoint — the Indian generic-API and finished-dose supply the U.S. is trying to onshore — and the timing is punishing: Section 232 pharmaceutical tariffs of 100% on patented drugs and APIs take effect July 31. An India-centric exporter is now absorbing soft U.S. pricing today and an imminent tariff regime in eight days.

The rest of the supply and CDMO complex sold off with it: Lonza (LZAGY) -5.3% to $65.73, Corning (GLW) -5.1% to $154.06 on the drug-packaging-glass side, WuXi (WUXAY) -3.7% to $20.07, Viatris -3.3% to $17.01, Novo Nordisk -2.4% to $48.19, and Baxter -2.1% to $21.74. The green that existed was scattered and defensive — Hikma (HKMPY) +1.9%, Merck KGaA (MKKGY) +1.6%, Stevanato +1.4% to $19.37, and Waters +0.9% to $370.82 — with no single catalyst binding the movers beyond the tariff clock and a wave of pending prints.

The calendar is dense and policy-driven. Today alone brings West Pharmaceutical and Sartorius H1 results plus an FDA classification decision on Novo Nordisk's Bloomington, Indiana fill-finish site; Danaher and Corning report July 28, Samsung Biologics July 29, and Mettler-Toledo and Baxter July 30. The hard line is July 31, when the 100% Section 232 pharma tariffs take effect — the event that turns the api-reshoring thesis from projection into P&L, and the one every name in this basket is now trading against.
